History of the Club

As the sun sets over the sprawling landscape of Nairobi, the history of one institution remains etched in the collective memory of the city’s colonial past. The Muthaiga Country Club, established on September 28th, 1912, has long stood as a testament to an era of ambition, excess, and exclusive social standing.
The history of the Muthaiga Country Club is replete with anecdotes that capture the decadence, eccentricity, and social intrigue of colonial-era Kenya…

In her 1942 memoir ‘West with the Night’, the pioneering aviator Beryl Markham provided a evocative description of the club’s atmosphere: "Its broad lounge, its bar, its dining-room - none so elaborately furnished as to make a rough-handed hunter pause at its door, nor yet so dowdy as to make a diamond pendant swing ill at ease - were rooms in which the people who made the Africa I knew danced and talked and laughed, hour after hour."

"Politicians escaping their fresh-built corridors of small connivance and enormous words lounged in the alcoves of Muthaiga... lion, elephant, buffalo, kudu - some dead a day, some dead for years – were revived again and shot again in corpses of Wedgwood saucers, behind hillocks of table linen, or in jungles of swizzle sticks." -  Lord Deedes, The Daily Telegraph, March 13th, 2000

Over the past century, the Club has transcended its origins to become a landmark of international renown. It is now frequently cited in global literature, historical accounts, and travel chronicles as one of the most distinguished private members' clubs in the world. This global status is not merely a product of its architectural elegance, but also its resilience; having survived the volatility of the colonial transition, it remains a central pillar of Nairobi’s social and professional life.
